Embracing the principles of personal accountability, quality workmanship, and a strong work ethic, Andrew Dykema recognized the importance and personal pride of a job well done at an early age — working with his father on the family farm.
It was those founding principles that have guided the company’s success, setting a benchmark for service, workmanship, and professional ethics that endures today.
Over the years, Dykema Excavators, Inc. set new standards for community involvement and professional ethics, co-founding the West Michigan Underground Contractors and Suppliers Association (UCSA), and one of the original members of the West Michigan Mineral Resource Association (WMMRA), and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of West Michigan. A classic story of a self-made man, Andrew began his career working on his father’s farm. After saving his money, and setting his sights on a personal goal, Andrew founded Dykema Excavating in 1948 — equipped with a single truck, a small bulldozer, and a dream.
Those early days were modest and demanding, hauling conveyor-loaded sand for 50 cents per yard delivered. But the hard work eventually paid off. By building a strong reputation, diversifying its construction expertise, and fueled by the prosperity of a rapidly growing city — the company thrived, and the name was soon changed to Dykema Excavators, Inc.
As the company grew, it acquired more equipment, and completed bigger, more complex, and more challenging projects. Eventually, all five of Andrew’s brothers joined the growing company, and it wasn’t long until the Dykema name emerged as a leader in the industry.
